California Earthquakes

I read an article written by Jeff Daniels of CNBC called "Earthquake Swarm Rattles Area Near California-Mexico Border" about earthquakes that hit California this week.  According to his article, California has experienced a large number of small earthquakes under the Salton Sea.  This has scientists thinking that a large one is coming soon since this group of smaller earthquakes happened by the San Andreas fault line.  There have been more than 140 earthquakes that have happened since Monday under the Salton Sea.  This has seismologists thinking that these small ones are going to trigger a huge earthquake on the San Andreas fault.  The largest earthquake that has happened this week is a 4.3.  Experts say that the San Andreas fault is able to produce an 8.0 earthquake.

The San Andreas fault runs the entire length of California and a major earthquake from this fault line would cause a lot of damage.  Many people would lose their lives.  Buildings, roads and bridges would be destroyed.  Since the fault runs through the entire state, this means that thousands of people could be left homeless and cities could be destroyed.  Hopefully the San Andreas fault line doesn't cause a huge earthquake and destroy the whole state of California.
